Umm Thierry pyramid schemes normally refer to schemes as in things where you get cheated. Just because you aren't always able to get all the people you need doesn't mean its a scheme. It just means that its real.
They get their money by advertising for those companies they make you sign up for. Then you tell 5 more people, even more people sign up for their services, and it's like a nuke; a chain reaction.
