Wanna be invisible!?

What you need to be able to do is make the pixels on the display (the jacket) transmit a different color for a different looking angle. That wouldn't be that hard to do, especially if the pixels are big. I mean, if you're pretty far away, it will be pretty hard to see you! This technology would be best used on vehicles, like a tank or something that's squared and/or doesn't have a lot of different surfaces. That way you wouldn't have to display as many different angles for your pixels. You would only have to worry much about the changing view horizontally, but not really so much vertically, especially if you're far away.

I honestly think this guy is going to try to take this pretty far. He can do stuff like what I mentioned above. He has experience in 3d virtual reality and calculating depth using multiple cameras: Real-time Rendering System of Human Figures from Arbitrary Viewpoints Using Multiple Cameras (a paper he co-authored). Here's a link to other stuff about him : http://www.star.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/~tachi/

Actually, the jacket uses glass beads that act as the display elements ("pixels"). I remember reading that from somewhere else.

Paul, you are retarded. Why the heck would a reputable professor ruin himself by making a hoax? IF it was going to be a hoax, it would look better! I mean, this thing would require only a couple minutes in Photoshop if he were going to fake it! And why would the Associated Press participate in this kind of hoax? Don't you think that they get a lot of this sort of National Enquirer crap all the time? You'd think that they'd call up the University or something! You're an idiot, Paul.

so you're saying the image on the coat is actually ON THE COAT? coz it sounds to me that its generated after the fact, using this special viewfinder.

if its on the coat itself then thats great, but the way these two articles are written it doesnt sound like it.

No, it's projected onto the coat, with a projector, that projects.

How big and/or invisible is that projector then? Hmm.. maybe you could have an invisible team of two people who project onto eachother... or maybe then they would only be invisible to eachother...

Well, the thing seems to have its limitations so far but it's really pretty cool anyway. That image really reminds me of Ghost in the Shell.

well I stick to my comment that it's ment more to make walls (in cars, airplanes, etc) transparent, not for hiding people or using it as camoflauge.
