It'd be EL gato, not la. El, Los, Ellos, etc. always signify a male. La, Ellas, Las, etc. always signify female. There's a few exceptions, one being el agua. That's a mistake that only a Spanish I student should make. What level are you in? Oh, and el should be un, otherwise you're saying "I need the taco in the cat." Just thought I'd point out some mistakes because I'm bored as hell.
