Me and my MINI

iVTEC is intelligent gas flow control. At around 4,200 RPMs the gas flow to my engine nearly doubles, making the HP and torque leap to a nice and steady peak rate.

Here is a sound clip. You can hear the difference when the iVTEC controller kicks in.

Shifting through three gears. There is a most definite time when you can hear the RPMs snap into a much louder volume (for the first 2/3rds you have to turn your speakers up just to hear the RPM before iVTEC kicks in). That sound wav is the Type S with the Injen SR Intake. The iVTEC on the Type S opens at around 4,700RPMs. (Yet another reason I like my base model better, I get more power and torque at lower RPMS.)

It just increases the flow of gasoline to the engine.

That doesn't make much sense, that would mean that before 4,200rpms, the gas flow is not at max. Why would they do that? On my car, and basically any other car, when you push the petal all the way down, the most gas as possible is flowing in. That iVTEC must be like turbo lag. That thing may be a problem for downshifting...does it only turn on at full throttle? Or just when it hits that rpm? If it only engages with the gas petal depressed (not necessarily all the way down), then downshifting should be a problem, but if it does, that could make you bounce through redline if you rev just slightly too much, but of course I don't have a Honda/Acura, so I don't know. That's a problem with cars that are too powerful or have too much turbo lag (or that iVTEC thing), the bounceback redline thing may not work, and that would be VERY bad. Just try downshifting with the clutch slowly without gas, if it turns on, I wouldn't try revving it.

Oh, and I must say, the person driving in the sound clip is pretty good at shifting, I can't double clutch that fast yet. My car sounds a little similar to that, the piston explosions are a little more distinct in mine, but you can't really tell from that sound clip.

Check out Acura or Honda's website for information on VTEC and the second generation iVTEC.

And I don't think that person is double clutching in the clip, although it does sound nice and smooth. I don't double clutch often so I'm not too quick at it. Don't have the flow to it yet. I think I'll practice double clutching, sounds like a very useful skill to acquire.
