Well if so then they're really mixing up event order, but no doubt they are.

yes, except that the second movie ends before the second book, but okay, it's their choice

(although I wonder why they gave up all the suspence of ending it with Frodo "dying")

It may be in sequence order, but not in the order that they're told in the book. SPOILER

Frodo and Sam got so much farther in the second book and I don't recall the battle of Gondor in the book. Actually I'm sure the battle of Gondor was not in the second book because after the ents surrounded Sauromon's tower they moved down the trail and trapped and killed a lot of orcs heading to Gondor and prevented them escaping from Helm's Deep or something similar to that. And the third book begins with Gandalf taking off with Merry and Pippin to Gondor to help them out, doesn't it? And Merry accidentally touches the seeing stone that Gandalf took from Sauromon's tower and messes up the plans and gets semi-possessed :/. The second book ended with Frodo going into a como after being bitten by the spider that Gollum leads them too and Sam takes the ring and continues the quest alone, until he heres from some orcs that Frodo isn't dead, only comotose! woohoo :D That was a much better ending and would have been great for the second movie. I don't know how they're going to fit all that's going to have to happen into one movie.
