The New York times has a real nice Flash presentation on various information, including weather sattelite picture on the debris path. (free registration required bla bla bla...)

Correction: Columbia is capable to reach ISS, but it has to use the ultralight external tank, etc. THis mission is a regular science mission so it uses the old lightweight tank. They definitely don't have enough fuel to chase the ISS and climb into different orbit.

------
The floating theory:

As of now It seems the tiles is just peeling off and the left wing burnt then rip, finally the shuttle just torn apart.

If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days, you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee.

If you fart consistently for 6 years and 9 months, enough gas is produced to create the energy of an atomic bomb.

An escape pod would be good, but yeah, it wouldn't be like in a movie, it would have to be of quite a big size, and that's convenient at all for the Shuttle. Plus the cost of it...NASA is strapped down as it is.

Some interesting theory, of possible deployment of the left landing gear, causing cascade of events leading to catastrophic end.

Crosswind technique: "Using your peripheral vision, react to body movements, gasps, groans, and shouts from the other side of the cockpit, and always remember that it's better to be lucky than good."
