Why are people so offended by...

Postby damian » Oct 15, 2002 @ 3:02am

Even atheism?

[EDIT]
OK, that was only a joke; I find atheism silly. If you can't prove God exists, then how can you prove He doesn't exist?

That's why I'm an agnostic.

Here's one for the Atheists and the Theists. How can you truely know anything? To know implies that you believe a certain fact to be true. But how can anything be 100% true? To know that something was 100% true, you would have to know everything there is to know. Science and just plain common sence has shown that all data is connected to each other. If I wanted to predict something as trivial as when the exact moment it would rain, I would have to literally know everything.

Because something as small as my neighbor smoking outside, could cause a chain of events that drasticly change the weather. I like to look at all knowledge as temporary knowledge. What is considered fact today may be considered false tomorrow. So when we have questions like "What is God? How was the Universe created? Do we exist? If God created existence then how did He/She/It exist? Does God even exist" and so forth, nobody will ever know for sure. Human brains are not big enough to hold all the data to know. So believe in a Just God or and Evil God or no God at all. It shouldn't matter to anyone else, but yourself.

One thing that always intrigued me, was why do people always add God at the end. For instance how was the universe brought into being? Some people say that it must have been God that created it. because after all, how can the universe spontaniously appear out of nothing, even if it did start out as a singularity. I mean where did the singularity that held space, time, energy, and matter come from? But you run into the same problem with God. If God created the universe, then where did God come from?

Who created God? Some say God is all powerfull and didn't need anything to create him, as he's always existed. But that is a cop out. The same could be said of the universe. If God has always existed and was never created, the universe could have always existed and was never created. But then you run into the problem of how can something have always existed? Our perception of time is linear, an so unless humans evolve into a species with a higher brain capasity, this and other problems like it, will never be solved. That's why I'm an Agnostic.

A = Greek for "without"

Gnostic = Greek for "knowledge of divine things"

How do I figure out if I've been good or bad? It's all relative, I'm not a cocaine dealer.

PS: this "good or bad" thing is how Santa Clause functions as well, coincidence? :P

Good and Bad is not a relative thing to God. You either do sin or you don't sin. The only person that hasn't sinned in the history of the world is Jesus. That's why he's so great. He died even though he never sinned.

A sin is disobeying any of the ten commandments, like Don't steal, don't murder, don't be adulterous, don't covet, don't talk back to your mom and date, and so forth.
But basically, you have sinned if you've ever thought about doing any of the ten commandments, because then you've done it in your heart. That's why we need Jesus, because it's so HARD to not sin. Everyone sins, there is nothing that can stop that.

That's also why Christianity is so great, because NO ONE is better than anyone else. We're all equal in the eyes of God. God doesn't count sins or anything like that. He only sees people as sinners or as non-sinners.

And to be a Christian all you have to do is believe that you're a sinner (which isn't hard) and that Jesus wasn't a sinner and that he died anyway. You don't have to believe Genesis literally or anything like 7000 years old and stuff like that. That's deeper debate stuff, completely different.
