WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS MTV!!!!!
What the hell! They're saying that an entire genre is going down? First of all, MTV is stupid, for examples of nu-metal, they put Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Disturbed, Papa Roach, Puddle of Mudd, and System of a Down. None of those are nu-metal! SOAD is alternative metal. The others are alternative rock, and Limp Bizkit is rap-rock. They mention Korn, but they're more heavy alternative metal than nu-metal. Nu-metal is MuDvAyNe, Mushroomhead, (hed) p.e. (kind of), Lollipop Lust Kill...
I just think it's completely unfair of MTV to be saying this, and then giving completely false examples! There's a meaning to the "metal" part of it, and that doesn't mean sugar coated Linkin Park! First of all, MTV doesn't show, or really talk about any of the REAL nu-metal, or any metal, AT ALL, and now they're saying it's crashing? Umm, apparently it is not from where I am. And they say this WHILE they say that MuDvAyNe's The End of All Things to Come is the "Best Rock of 2002". MTV controls the media, and this is a MAJOR blow to the entire rock genre, because it's only denouncing it all.
I don't know what MTV's talking about, I don't see Korn falling, I don't see a shortage of bands. I want to go out some time soon and get the Demon Hunter CD, and I'd classify that as nu-metal.
Elements of nu-metal:
Same as heavy metal, but with differences:
Higher pitched screaming, kind of "animalistic".
Very fast vocals as compared to heavy metal
Songs are usually fast, and change within the song frequently with several mood changes (meaning, it'll have a really fast thrash metal part, then go into a melodic keyboard with singing).
Some kind of extra uniqueness, like keyboards, xylophone, effects, harps, and even bagpipes.
The term "nu" refers to, well duh, NEW, which means technologically new, hense the use of keyboards and other effects to create the "uniqueness".
Examples:
MuDvAyNe - may not use extra instruments, but the creative and unique (and completely insane) guitar and bass sets MuDvAyNe well apart from the usual heavy metal. Melodic parts make huge contrasts to the heavy parts.
Mushroomhead - Major use of keyboards, xylophone, song changes, and I mean, you have to hear it to believe it, heavy use of piano, crazy vocals and lyrics...wonderful.
Lollipop Lust Kill - Perfect use of eery gothic style keyboards without being freaky. Melodic soothing chorus, and overall uniqueness.
What do you people think? Is nu-metal going down? According to MTV, is System of a Down going down? Is Linkin Park no more? Is Korn off the their cob? I say absolutely no, that it's still evolving, and that in the future, it will only become more and more insane, incorporating more "industrial" sounds, or techno, or who knows. There's one thing for sure, MTV is stupid.
