If nu-metal is metal with rap, then what's punk?

Has anyone heard of the band t.A.T.u? It's 2 girls from Russia, REALLY REALLY good! Pronounced "tattoo", they hit MTV Russia in 2000, and rose to the top, and are now coming to the US. I've heard 2 songs, All The Things She Said, and Not Gonna Get Us. All The Things She Said is their main song, with a video, and is SOOOO good! The other song is, meh. But this one is OMG so good! You have to hear it, and the video is REALLY good, conveys the emotion well, and I mean, who wouldn't want to watch 2 INSANELY hot Russian lesbians make out in the rain? Here's a bunch of , I like the black-haired one :D.

Ignorance!!!! Oh the ignorance!!!!

Rap is metal mixed with rap? And you think we're off with nu-metal.

Punk is not so much a form of music, as a lifestyle. For the general musical concensus, though, listen to the Clash, the Ramones (that's more pop-punk), Misfits, Propagandhi, etc. It has nothing to do with rap or spiked hair. In fact, most punks despise rap. Sum-41 is NOT punk, and in fact is not even close. It's pop rock.

I know punk is more of lifestyle, but I don't really know much about punk, I don't listen to much of it, like Bad Religion, and The Get Up Kids.

What would you say Rage Against The Machine is? I'd say rap-metal, it's too metal to be punk, but not crazy enough to be nu-metal. And what about Audioslave? They're essentially the same (I hate the new vocals though, man, the new guy's voice ruins it all!), and they're very popular, so I don't know what MTV is smokin'.

[edit]I just read through MTV's article again, and basically their ONLY evidence for the "meltdown" of nu-metal is the "evaporation" of nu-metal songs from their countdowns and radio playlists. First of all, radio stations play what MTV tells them to play. And also, if you look on the MTV site for the Rock Countdown vote, they don't put stuff like MuDvAyNe, Stone Sour, or Soulfly on the voting list! So how are they going to get on the countdown!! It's MTV's own fault!! But they do play "Extreme Rock" videos...at 1:30AM - 2:30AM...

I listen to an incredibly diverse amount of music. It ranges from abrasive punk/hardcore to incredibly sparse soundscapes. Some of my favorite bands include...

Modest Mouse - an indie rock group of incredible talent

Coldplay - a brit-pop rock group

Red Animal War - post-punk, true emo, great harder rock

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - soundscapes, indie, very sparse, CD's usually consist of two-four tracks with massive buildups and crescendos, sometimes silence for a minute or more at a time, see also A Silver Mt. Zion, a side-project of theirs

Radiohead - very strange, ranging from weird pop-rock (earlier in career) to more soundscape, weird anti-pop stuff (post-OK Computer)

Flaming Lips - indie pop, acid-rock kinda stuff

Galactic - acid jazz, big on crescendos and such

Pixies - early pop-punk, incredibly influential even today

Built to Spill - indie-pop, Doug Martsch (guitarist) is a genius who layers up to 7 guitars on top of each other

I suggest some of you check out some of these bands if you're interested, head over to pitchforkmedia.com to find reviews of most of them. Also a great indie review site.
