I saw this on slashdot. Rockstar Games have released GTA (the first one) to download for free.
I've not gotten through, due to the amount of traffic right now, but it's supposed to be at this url: .
I really appreciate that Rockstar released a game that is out of its shelf life for free. I hope more companies will follow their lead.

I hope they decided to make it open source too.

It's not open source, but they were nice to reduce the quality of the samples, and keep them in uncompressed WAV.

I'm getting it fast from BitTorrent right now!
Does anyone know if there are any multiplayer GTA1 servers nowadays? I mean with this release thousands will play it again so maybe the multiplayer servers could get active again :)

I believe the GTA windows version had support for TCP/IP, so it works over the internet too.
Yea, I guess GameSpy Arcade might be able to do it. I'm gonna check it out.
[edit] Gamespy doesn't seem to support GTA :(
Oh well I'll just play it on lan [/edit]

It's still only freeware, not open source... it's a bit hard to make a port of a game when you don't have the source, and I doubt that Rockstar's gonna spend a lot of time working on free games.
