Tons of 802.11b routers are on sale at BestBuy. I was just wondering if it would be possible to hook up DLink's 4port router with Wifi Access Point to the network line that comes into my dorm room to be able to use my laptop/tablet wirelessly. Is that possible, or does the DI-614+ have to act as a hub, or is it not pragmatic?

Also, I noticed a "Range extender" that can act as an access point. Not as cheap, but it looks like it would have more of a chance of working. Would it work to plug this DWL-800AP+ into the ethernet line into my dorm room and use it as a wireless access point for my room? It's twice as expensive, but if it's sure to work and the router is not then I'd be willing to spend the cash.

All of my computers have WiFi built in, so it would just be so much easier. My roomy probably lacks computing devices so I don't exactly need the four ports on the router, but the router is $29.99, with a built in firewall! The Wireless ranger extender is $59.99 and has no firewall.

Yeah, what's college without wireless? Then again, some colleges have WiFi already.

Most colleges have wireless already. However, if your school doesnt, you might think about getting a router like this: http://www.trendware.com/products/TEW-212APBO.htm . Then, you could put the wireless router outside, and still reach it all around campus.

I ended up getting the DI-614+. It ended up being cheaper, and the little range extender slash access point was pretty huge when I saw it. Plus, the DI-614+'s built in firewall will allow me to anonymize myself from the college's network to a SMALL degree, and allow me to control the network to my likings, atleast within my sub-net.

I have it hooked up in my room right now connected to a port on the linksys router in my living room. Works perfectly. I'm connected though it typing this right now. Maybe I should buy a couple more of them to simply extend the range of my home network a tad.

I know. But I'm not in middle school, so I'm completely ignoring that.

Oh, I thought you were a contemporary of MWalker, etc. How old are you?

i have the same dlink router, infact... i've got two, one at my parents house, and one here in my new apartment. They're great, i can't wait for my wifi cf card to come this week so i can walk around and be on the internet, that always rocks.
