Bleh. I'm tired of dealing with Compaq. I FINALLY got Windows2000 to load on my laptop and recognise all my hardware EXCEPT the modem.

Compaq is about as helpful as a drunk Chuck. I've even gone to Lucent Technologies looking for a Win2K driver for the Lucent 56K v.90 PCI modem. What the hell is it with these people? do they just pour this crap out their ass and then forget about any kind of upgrades?

I am never buying another Compaq product ever again. This kind of BS just has to stop.

For real. Hell I even started with a complete CLEAN INSTALL of Win2k. I've tried a million drivers, even generic ones. I've uninstalled, rebooted...

I thought maybe the WinNT/Win98/WinME driver might work but it doesn't. It isn't a mis-configuration... I can work those things out pretty easily.

Win2K disables the hardware because "it isn't a Windows 2000 supported device". This is an older laptop (It was loaded with Win95 from the factory) with the latest bios update.

Last modification: randall - 07/10/01 at 11:10:40

Anyway, I can't find a single Win2K driver for that modem (Lucent 56K v.90 PCI DF Modem). I've seen Linux drivers galore.

a win modem just has no hardware controller chip. 'Windows' does all the processing. It's actually just the drivers that do the processing, in software, using up your CPU cycles, but you get the idea.

"do they just pour this crap out their ass and then forget about any kind of upgrades? "
Yes, they do randall. You're dealing with a winmodem. It costs them about $1.59 to make, and they sell em for 30. The Tiwanese worker children do all the labor for pennies an our (so, yep, right out their ass).

I can't remember exactly what Win2k says, since I don't have my laptop right in front of me.

Anyway, by default, it loads a
Compaq Presario 56K-VSC driver. In device manager it has the expected "!" icon, and says that
"this device has been disabled because the firmware for this device did not give it the required resources"

There is no option to enable it, and doing a manual configuration of resources doesn't save the changes.

Now I have an
LT Modem driver loaded, which still has the "!" icon, but at least it is enabled. It just says that the device doesn't exist and still doesn't work.

The original Win95 driver that came with this computer was a the "Lucent 56K v.90", yet anything that even remotely resembles that won't work.

WindowsUpdate doesn't even recognise a modem on my computer.

I guess I'll try another group of genereic drivers.
you might need to either 1: get compaq on the phone and ask them which resources the modem uses, ie: IRQ, COM Port, etc.. then use the LT Winmodem driver and configure the IRQ Resources and which com port you are using manually.. that might work.

oh, number 2 was to go back to windows 95 temporarily and grab the IRC resources, etc. that your modem uses.

You can upgrade your LT Win Modem to version 5.97, which supports Windows 9x, 2000, ME and NT for ISA and PCI Note: This software upgrade will not work with DSL capable modems.

are these drivers what u have?

Yeah, I tried those drivers. It was a no-go. I've even scoured the Compaq message boards hoping for some clues.

Good thing I had Norton Ghost and had an image of my win98 install. 10 Minutes and I had Win98 up and running again with everything reinstated the way it was before I installed Win2K.

I also Ghosted my Win2K install so I can go back and try it again when I have more time on my hands.

Oh well, this is closest I've come to having Win2K on my laptop. I've recieved FAR more support from this Forum than I ever did with Compaq.
