I'd say that Christianity probably is the best religion to keep the masses in line. What a religion is like now is irrelevant; we have to consider how it was when it first arose, because if it never spread, it wouldn't matter now. Christianity was essentially an effective amalgamation of myths/gods/theology before it and it had a compelling message and moral system. It was exploitable by the powers-that-be(en), but it wasn't completely hijack-able.

It would be stupid to say something like "there's a reason that Christianity is the largest religion in the world," because that "reason" could be defined as anything from its effective crowd-control methods to the power of the cultures that first adopted it. I do, however, think that it is probably the best religion for its place.
