I just happened to notice that all of a sudden an extra winlogon.exe showed up on my system today. Damn virus.....I'm downloading AntiVirus software right now.

I had something like that a good 3 or 4 years ago (just as spyware was emerging in every piece of colourful software). The bugger was though, that as soon as I terminated the process, up popped a message saying (in badly translated english) something like "do not ever close logonmgr computer will crash restart now", and up popped the process again.

It turned out to be TWO processes, each one making sure the other wasn't closed.

Installed firewall, found a hell of a load of outgoing traffic from one of the processes, got out my ole DOS bootdisk, booted up and deleted the 2 pesky files.

...which naturally broke my network connection. It had hooked itself into windows VERY well.

In the end I just backed everything up and reinstalled - it was all pretty gunked up anyway.

I really hate that crap.

A friendly virus?

Sounds like an STD.
