Just read this article over at FoxNews:

What are your opinions on embryonic Stem-Cell research?

Please do stem cell research. Anyone who thinks it's wrong to take some cells from an aborted baby should have been aborted.

http://www.dnalc.org/stemcells.html

That describes how stem cells are harvested and cultured.

Well, then, Chuck, you must be a supporter of Bush. I applaud Bush's decision, actually, I think it works, at least for the next decade or so. There are 78 stem cell lines in existence, and Bush has allowed research on those lines. Once you have one embryonic stem cell it will keep multiplying, so you don't need to harvest anymore embryoes for the moment. Stem cells are still very much in the research stage and are not quite to the applicable stage, yet, and won't be for a bit of time.

What I think is really needed is a way to extract stem cells without destroying the blastocystic embryo. Then everyone would be happy... for the most part anyway.

What the hell is even the opposition's view on this? I can never for the life of me understand why, besides yelling YOU CAN DESIGN YOUR OWN BABY! to which I usually think/respond "Yea, well you can also cure several deadly diseases, you jackass."
holy internets batman.

When someone has an invitro pregnancy procedure hundreds of embryos are made. Then about 5-10 are put in the woman. Under current laws all that can be done with the left overs is destroy them. Why not let them be used for Stem Cell research?

Because the embryo has to grow within the womb for about 7 to 10 days. At that point it starts to produce stem cells that are harvestable, at least that was my understanding. This means the woman must abort this embryo to give it to science. The other embryoes are not harvestable at that point (and I thought they were simply frozen, and that's only a specific kind of invitro fertilization.)

The opposition's view is that it is abortion of an embryo that could have grown to maturity and be birthed. Or simply that the destruction of the embryo to harvest stem cells is murder of an embryo that had the potential to mature.
