Setting up FTP and running a webbie off my computer.

Postby Chad » Jul 12, 2004 @ 6:22am

My friend did this, and he doesn't pay a dime... this is the site he made for his CS clan.

I would love to do this to make a site for myself, but I don't want to pay for all that stuff I don't understand. Maybe you guys could explain all the different things to me, like domain, hosting, etc.

Any pointers would be great. Thanks!

I would suggest against this for many reasons:

1. Many ISPs prohibit this, some are more lenient, though most block port 80. You can easily get booted off, though.

2. Your upstream sucks. No, I'm not psychic, I can guarantee it does.

3. Although .tk domains are free (don't they have popups or something) anything else doesn't.

4. You're opening yourself up to a pretty substantial risk, generally computers running webservers are targetted a bit more since they're generally believed to be servers, and thus are fast and usually on some sort of non-consumer level service.

Just go get a free host, foward the tk domain there, and live with that, or shell out for an ubercheap service.
holy internets batman.

Errr... my ISP sucks, because they sent me an IP/DNS/etc thing in the mail to put in through propeties, so I doubt that they would care at all, and they only have one internet tech that's always out for lunch.

My upstream does suck. 768/256 ADSL. He's able to run it off a consumer level connection though...

How much does a .com domain usually run? If it's too much, I will stick with .tk.

:( Didn't think of that one. Will a consumer level firewall and anti-virus help? What about a router with built-in firewall?

Crosswind technique: "Using your peripheral vision, react to body movements, gasps, groans, and shouts from the other side of the cockpit, and always remember that it's better to be lucky than good."

Organic Superlube? Oh, it's great stuff, great stuff. You really have to keep an eye on it, though--it'll try and slide away from you the first chance it gets.

Okay it looks like I will go get hosting then. Do any of these packages look decent?

Edit: nevermind, I'm getting a headache.

Sorry for the rez..
But, I actually have set up one of my own, as well. As for posing a security risk, I doubt something's going to happen. My server computer is an old 333Mhz Athlon K6-2 with 320MB's of RAM. I doubt it could support more than 5-10 people at a time using it.
Here it is, if you want to take a look:
