Ok, I just installed red hat v 7.3 on my computer (downloaded it off the web site). Now, I think I installed it correctly (hell, I'm using it right now), but there are a few questions I have.

1. How do I configure my mouse. I have a logitech mouse with a scroll wheel, and four buttons. (the right and left, one on the scroll whell, and one on the left side of the mouse). I have checked www.logitech.com for linux drivers, but had no luck. Also, I am unable to figure out where to configure the mouse (i.e. change the driver, not the speed (I found that)).

2. Sound. I have an audigy XGamer sound card. Creative doesn't have any drivers for linux though. My main concern here is that I am hearing no sound (I would be happy for now with just basic sound). I did see a button that says enable sound server startup, and I checked it (it was unchecked). I have yet to restart (I am updating all of the components right now), but without restarting, I still hear no sound. Also, it never told me I had to restart.

I have to go now, so I will close with a general question. How do I use *.sh files. I downloaded a *.sh file from the nvidia website which would confirm the version of linux which I have installed. I don't know how to use it however. I apparently have my work cut out for me tomorrow (research and all), so I will thank you now for any and all help.

Try (can't remember the name) xconfig? xf86cfg? Something like that.

You might need to recompile your kernel with sound support.

*.sh files are run in the console with the command name.

Maybe my answers can at least guide you in the right direction.

hmmm i like mandrake better. Cant beat harddrake! I had my wheel mouse dsl modem, and my geforce 4 up and ready to go in seconds. but i suppose red hat is a lil better for servers.

I threw away my original install CD

and I went to download the drivers and when I goto install them it tells me to insert the CD... but I do not have it anymore!!

Anyone know what to do bout that ?

I use Mandrake too. Great distro, can't wait till 9 is stable.

ok, still no luck with the sound card. I checked, and it appears as if the correct drivers are already in use. So, I was wondering, which os do you guys think is better redhar or mandrake? I am assuming that a messed something up in the original installation, so I will have to reinstall anyways. Let me know.

I think I'll switch back to Mandrake the next time I use linux...

noobie friendly is good. I am downloading mandrake right now, and have already deleted linux.

Mandrake managed to get everything right, including OpenGL on my V3 2000 PCI. With BSD, I couldn't get into X with a res above 8x6
