UT2K3 Demo OUT!

UT2K3 Demo OUT!

Postby Warren » Sep 14, 2002 @ 6:32pm

FINALLY! The Unreal Tournament 2003 Demo has been released! I'm downloading it now, and am praying that it'll work. I downloaded the demo of Battlefield 1942 yesterday, but my computer couldn't handle it, and UT2K3 meets my requirements amazingly, so we'll see! I'm too excited!

UT2K3 is going to be THE multiplayer game. Doom 3 aren't even going to try and challenge it, hell, they're not going to even bother with P2P 4 player networking, with no join after start (looks like they've borrowed the Doom netcode. Hell, csDoom and ZDaemon support more players than D3)

Shame it's only included medium-res textures. 100MB is pretty paltry by today's standards, especially in the FPS genre.

Quake4 and BF1942 are the only contenders to UT2K3's reign, and BF1942 is really more of a niche game, ala Tribes II (teamplay orientated, buggy :P, breaking apart from the usual FPS games)

Warren, BF1942 is VERY slow.. especially single player. Turn off lightmaps, hardware sound acceleration (even if you can use it) and lightmaps. HUGE speed increase right there.

UT2K3 demo does not work for me :cry:. My computer is crap. I don't meet the minimum requirements, so that's that. It crashes on startup, but if I do a benchmark startup, it gives me this error:

UT2003 Build UT2003_Build_[2002-09-13_17.31]

OS: Windows 98 4.10 (Build: 67766446)
CPU: AuthenticAMD PentiumPro-class processor @ 499 MHz with 127MB RAM
Video: Voodoo3 AGP (666)

Assertion failed: RenDev [File:WinViewport.cpp] [Line: 536]

History: UWindowsViewport::OpenWindow <- UGameEngine::Init <- InitEngine

Overall, it means that my computer can't handle the engine. I got the same error for America's Army. I'll be building my own computer in about 2.5 months, so I'll be playing it then. As for Battlefield 1942, Sponge, you don't get it, I CAN'T play it, it doesn't even open. It says "Cannot match minimal videomode" and crashes. I've just been playing Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault over and over again, and it runs really bad too, 10 fps or less. Even Return to Castle Wolfenstein runs at less than 15-20fps. I can't wait til I get a new computer!!!! I need it before Doom III comes out, I NEED to play that game!!

Warren, it's your Voodoo 3. I've been hearing conflicting reports that it REQUIRES an NVidia card to run, as it uses their propietary extensions, much like the original Unreal with 3DFX & Glide (for a while)

With the CPU speed, even if you had a GE4, it'd be pointless. And seeing your PC now, same deal with BF1942 :P

To put it bluntly, forget about running any new games.
