No, that's not it. It's just something that vendors can put into their devices, which allows devices to be recognized and used instantly. Same way those USB key devices work. Only Mac OS 9 and above (correct me if I'm wrong) and 2000 and above support it. You don't *need* any software to use the Windows iPod, you can just plug it in and drag files onto it. The CD you think are drivers are just supplementary software - the reason why it says 98 is not supported; it doesn't support USB Mass Storage devices natively

I don't think it will work, but it's for a similar product (similar in storage method)

No... there's more to USB mass storage than connecting data to a USB port. It's basically a standard protocol so different drivers aren't needed for different USB storage systems (flash card readers, digital cameras, hard drives, etc.)

Wait, Sandmann, I never figured this out... so the iPod doesn't have a USB port? As in, are you able to phisically connect it to your computer? If it did have a USB port then it wouldn't be firewire-only.

yes but they dont use USB Mass storage. They are FireWire.
