Yeah, it's pagan. It looks like one of those things that the Church "adopted" so that they have a festival the same day as everybody else. In the dictionaries it's "All Saints' Even".

The funky lanterns were designed to scare away evil spirits.

I've been so busy with work recently that without your post I wouldn't have know it was Halloween this week. :cry: (Though all-saints day is a day off here... but I'll be working :cry:).
