Don't forget the lights on the projectiles for the cool railgun effect :)

The LEDs on the coils will be sufficient, we can use them with small capacitors to make the light fade off. The LEDs are also mainly for safety reason, to make sure all the coils work and turn off.

Warren, what grade are you in? 12th?
I wish I could do projects like these... But, unfortunately, I believe I lack the intelligence to make one.

Oh, didn't know the euro exchange rates were that much different, but at that powerlabs.org site it says that the supercapacitors used are about $300 as new (the guy in the article bought used ones I think).
I know you don't need supercapacitors, but then you don't get as impressive results, I imagine ;)
I saw another site ( ) where there are plans for a much smaller coilgun (single coil too), but it only shoots about 9 m/s. Not too bad, but nothing compared to that 200 km/h+ thing that was on powerlabs 8)

Ya, the euro is a great investment. It started at around 0.70 dollars, now it's at 1.02, was near 1.20 not long ago. If I recall correctly, that is.

That coilgun that shoots at 9m/s is a small handheld one, with only 3 very small coils and pithetic capacitors.

Here's a site that has basically the exact layout of our coilgun -

Today, me and a groupmate went to the town dump to gather some choke coils, but it was closed, but we went in anyway. After about 2 hours, we got quite a lot, but then 2 cops showed up and said that we're trespassing and larceny. We got off without anything, but I'm still pretty rattled from it, the cops were really pissed off at us...

Real smart Warren. Arn't you supposed to pay for things at a junk yard and not just help yourself to them?
