Actually, the first 'true' 3D game is Ridge Racer. It was the first game to use textured polygons. Before that, games like Virtua Racing and Hard Drivin' used untextured polygons.

I, Robot was the first game to use polygons at all, period by the way. Damn cool game it is.

Ok let me reword that. Why do you have to have textures for it to be considered 3 dimensional?

It doesn't. Textured polygons and polygons are 2 different beasts, the latter is a helluva lot easier.
