Yep. With Win98, I used to see a BSOD at least once a day. Now, I can't remember the last time the system actually crashed. Sure, you might get a hangup on a program, and it's a little slow on my old laptop, but stable. About the only thing more stable then this would be Linux.

My win2k box doesn't crash very often. MSFT has certainly improved, but it's still a long ways from being as stable as a proper *nix setup. My 2k box still needs to be restarted every week or so, for instance. I don't know what causes it, but windows seems to get slow when it's left up for a long time. And I only run a handful of programs -- all of them mainstream software.

And what is the lifespan on a windows install? How long until the bastard refuses to boot up?

There's nothing quite like that feeling after you've stayed up all night and finished a major assignment, only to see your computer crash -- not only whiping out the last hour or so of your work, but also leaving you with a computer that won't boot up. That happened to me last semester, and contributed to my only B+.

Of course, it wasn't Windows fault I lost that A. Windows is only a tool -- and with well-known failings. Regardless, I've learned my lessons.

The most important one: any faith in Windows to stay operational is eventually going to screw you.

Longhorn looks really promising :).
Kinda like the ultimate mix of Windows XP, Linux (or whatever *nix you want ;)) and Mac OSX :D.

I'm using build 2142 of SP2 and it kinda amazingly sucks. Crashes when I try to play a divx file or even when it sees one in explorer. That's a known issue too, so it's not my fault either.

Damien, I have that too with SP1a when some of MPEG or DivX movies try to make a preview image in explorer...

Is there any way to solve that?

Organic Superlube? Oh, it's great stuff, great stuff. You really have to keep an eye on it, though--it'll try and slide away from you the first chance it gets.
