Over several years I used to maintain a web page chronicling the development of open source RTS games.
You wouldn't believe how many projects would start up, do a bit of work, then disappear.
The most ambitious project seemed to have everything, yet still went nowhere. Started in 1996, it's now almost 2005 and all I can find are old copies of the site from 2000. For years this game was just months away from beta release, and where is it now?
Everyone wants to make an RTS or RPG. Guess what, it isn't easy. I will say now that if you are one person with little experience, you will fail. Everyone thinks they are different, but I've seen it happen dozens of times.
Build up to it. Choose a first project that is reasonable for you. Believe me, you will have enough problems completing even a simple project with good quality. Your first project should be something you can complete, that acquaints you with all of the issues involved in a PDA game release, and sets your reputation.
Or, if you really want to work on an RPG or RTS or something equally ambitious, that's fine. Those are fun projects to work on. Just don't expect to finish it. That's OK if that's what you want. I myself worked on RTS code for a few years as a hobby. I never finished it, but it was always more of a fun coding playground than a serious project. As soon as I decided to finish a complete game, I shelved that code and started a simpler project.
That's my advice. You don't have to follow it, but do consider it.
