the roots of modern 'emo' are posthardcore. of course most of what today passes as emo is not very similar to it's roots. The very first bands that diverged from the traditional hardcore sound tended to be in a ton of bands that influenced or were the first bands that sound like today's emo. Technically, screamo (my favorite emo incarnation) is the truest reminents of typical post-hardcore bands, but the similarities from said genre and 'emo' are aplenty: Loud-soft dynamics, 'emotional' lyrics, 'pretty' chords and song structuring, etc. yep.
