CityPipe 1.0 - new game for Pocket PC

Postby AlxS » Sep 22, 2006 @ 1:58pm

Hi, everyone.

I just finished a game for Pocket PC. It takes something from Plumber and something from Tetris. I hope you’ll enjoy it :)

Here’s the link:

And here is a screenshot:

Any feedback (suggestions, bug reports, comments, etc.) is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

It plays well and looks good...

It could use some sound, though.

The thing I didn't realize at first was that you could move the falling pipe back up to the top - of course, you can just keep doing this almost indefinitely on the slower levels.

It seems like it would get boring quickly with only the speed increasing... If it had more of a logic puzzle aspect instead of sheer speed, it might be more rewarding.

(you may want to mention in your post that the download is the ppc application - no PC based installer. I think most people expect for it to install thru the PC and make the shortcut in the games folder)

Thanks for the detailed review!

There is "some sound" in the game :)
It has sound for pipe placing, for buttons and for connection credit. Did you mean music or even more sound? :)

About "boring" - the puzzle part is to figure out how to get maximum possible score for each level.

Gameplay may seem boring, but on the other hand - so does Tetris, which is quite popular :)

I personally enjoy playing CityPipe so I thought someone might too...

Plus all levels are designed by hand what should give you some little fun out of pure "sightseeing" :)

Anyway, I would like to hear any ideas about how to improve it.

And, yes, you're right, I should have mentioned that EXE is PPC application.

And I probably also should mention that you can post your results on the website even if you haven't purchased the game.

Thanks again!

Any more suggestion and ideas, guys?

I've only heard 2 sounds... a menu 'clink' and a connection cash register. Nothing for just placing a pipe.
I'd put in something for the start of level, and finish at least.

I didn't say it was boring - only that it seemed like it could get boring if there wasn't the correct balance between the speed of the pipes and amount of logic. It is enjoyable.

Speaking of this, If you gave more of a breakdown of costs/bonus at the end - it would show the player how well they did more clearly. For instance, on #4, do you get more points for doubling up the pipe or just being direct?

There is also a pipe placing sound, but it is rather soft, I didn’t want to annoy players with loud sound effects :)

Yes, I probably should find and add some nice, victorious sound for level end.

About scoring... I was thinking about displaying the total cost of the pipeline at the level end, but this will add another screen and things may get really confusing, what numbers are for what level, etc...

BTW, I want to give you a free regkey, I would like to hear your opinion about the game as a whole :)

Please, contact me by email or PM me, so I can arrange it. Thanks!

Hello, guys!

I released CityPipe version 1.1.

I made some levels easier, some harder to achieve more smooth and balanced gameplay.

I also added 4 more levels.

Download the new version here:

I had played this just a bit when it was first released, and decided to go back and give it a whirl again with version 1.1.

There's definitely a lot of potential here. Unfortunately, I think there are a couple of fundamental flaws in the presentation. First of all, unless you're really quick at discerning the parts needed to correctly configure the pipeline, you're going to spend more time moving parts back up to the top than anything. That gets to be a bit tedious.

Second, as you're dragging parts back up, it's entirely possible to accidentally let go too early, inadvertently laying them down somewhere that you did not intend to. With no way to remove a pipe, that's really annoying. Even if you meant to put a pipe somewhere, you should get the option to get rid of it later if you change your mind. You should still lose the money you spent, but at least the pipe would be gone.

Aesthetically, it looks pretty good. It could definitely use some music, however, and you might want to make the pipe sound effects a bit louder. It's nice that you don't want to bother people, but I think most players do like some noise when playing games.

City Pipe has the potential to be a really good game, but so far I've messed up the first level so many times by laying a pipe in the wrong place (usually by accident) that I personally wouldn't be inclined to purchase the game.
