I'll put my second vote for Nirvana. They aren't heavy metal, but they've easily been the most influential musical thing in my life. I grew up listening to them, getting a taste of what hard rock could be. My mom would always pick the radio station, so I grew up with Smash Mouth, Smashing Pumpkins, Greenday, Blink 182 (that was more recent), Sugar Ray, Goo Goo Dolls, Barenaked Labies, and The Verve Pipe, yet once in a while, they'd play Nirvana. I know that because I grew up listening to mostly sugarcoated music, that's why I like hardcore music now. Nirvana introduced me to it.
I want to list a bunch of bands because I can't remember all the names and when (well, that's mostly an "if") I get a new computer with a working CD burner, I want to burn an mp3 CD with like a million songs on it, so I'm listing the bands I want on it here for future reference.
