3D Games for the PPC

3D Games for the PPC

Hi all, new guy here. I've have my Toshibe e740 for about 5 months now and love it. Sure it's a little slow on the 3D games but the 2D stuff works great. Seems like from what I've been reading, none of the current PPC's really kick butt with the 3D games. Not matter what PPC you have framerates over 20 fps seem to be rare or nonexistant.

As a long time desktop gamer I've spent countless hours tweaking my systems for maximum performance and so I've become a good judge of what I'm getting for fps. I'd guess that a game like Interstellar flames is giving me about 15 fps on average. Where as a game like Geopod is giving me around 8-10 with other cars on the track and maybe up to 13-15 when I'm alone. Both games are pretty playable at that speed but it's a far cry from the 60 fps I get as minimum on most my desktop games.

The Doom port give me similar frames to Geopod but for some reason Racing Days gives me horrible framerates that are probable around 4-5 fps. That's totally unplayable in my book.

So my curiousity asks why aren't their more games out there based on the Interstellar Flames engine? It seems to be 50% faster than another engine I've tried. Sure, some of the effects are sprites but it's clearly designed within the limits of the current PPC's. The X-forge engine is not bad but still pushing the PPC beyond it's limits just a bit.

Clearly 3D games on the PPC are in their infancy; reminds me of the days when Doom came out and people were scrambling to get the best performance out of their 486's to get that playable 15fps. I'll stick mainly to the Age of Empires and Snails games for now but it sure would be cool to play a fancy 3D game on the PPC.
