How long will my registration code last?

What I mean to ask is how updates work around here. If I've registered for the most up to date version, when a newer version comes out, will I have to pay for that one, too, or will I get it for free or at a discount?

Just thinking (woah... stand back!), if Snails authenticates with the Snails Server to check Registration Code... what happens in say 10 years time when the Snail Development fades away?

Are we still able to use the Software+Reg Code without an authentication server?
