Inexpensive laptops...

Inexpensive laptops...

Postby Mechcommander » Nov 21, 2003 @ 9:10pm

Yo all. I've been looking into buying/asking for a laptop lately, and I'm wondering what you guys would think of some of these. Now, don't start suggesting Tablets, PocketPC's, or the like, I want a laptop, and a cheap one at that. I've looked at these models:

Feel free to suggest more (in the same price range)!
I'm looking for a laptop at about $600-$900 that can play games like Unreal Tournament, BattleZone II, Mechwarrior 3, etc.. Not an uber gaming laptop, but one that will run older games fairly well. I also want to be able to take it to school almost every day. It's gonna get some heavy note-taking use. So, feel free to suggest some carrying cases! What do you guys think?

I've been doin' tons of laptop research myself over the past year, readying for when I go to college. This is the one I picked:

It's the top of the line in the world for laptops, of course this one is above your budget, with my specifications, it's about $3,500.

As for the Compaq laptop, one of my friends had one, it was wrapped in duct tape to keep it together...nuff said...

I've never heard of Averatec, so I can't give an opinion on that.

HP is one of the lowest quality computers out today, laptops? I don't know...I wouldn't get one personally.

Of the ones you said, Compaq is the top, it may last, with or without duct tape

Here's one I recommend for you:

Sager is the maker of the top laptop chassis, and the full laptops they sell are good for the price. This one is $945, a bit over your budget, but may be worth it.

If you want a bit more color, you can look at HypersonicPC, but that's a little over $1,000, but may be higher quality than Sager.
(if you want the BEST color, that's Voodoo, with real European car paint, look at this one-)

Also check out Fujitsu, Sony, and Toshiba.

Damn Warren, that's just beautiful.

I haven't felt this way since Britney Spears told me to hit that one more time.

Here's my other favorite color of theirs, . I just can't decide, Monza Olive Green or Imola Orange! Many of their paints are made by Lamborghini.

Check out this video of the , it only partially gives the color justice.

I just looked at Fujistu, Sony, and Toshiba, and none of the laptops are within your budget range, so this may take more research. Dell...there's some that are in that range, but the quality and what you get are not worth it. Gateways are terrible, I know a few people with the laptops, and they can't do anything with them, extremely loud, and for some reason, all of them have trouble playing videos, and gaming? That's out of the question for them...

EDIT: M:855, no, it actually gets over 3 hours. The M:600 though, gets only 15-20 minutes (it weighs 15lb too, with up to 3 harddrives, meant to be a desktop replacement)

The Sager looks nice. I doubt I'll be able to raise $1000 though.
Yeah, I've looked at the VooDoo envy's. Damn nice computers right there. Too bad I'd have to sell a kidney and my liver to buy one.

Well that depends, how much do you want for your kidney and liver?

This is tough, because usually, low grade laptops (<$1,500) are about $300 more than the corresponding desktop, and high end laptops (>$2,000) are about $1,000 more than the corresponding desktop, which means that a $600 laptop is like a $300 computer, and the only computer I know right now for $300 is eMachines, and you really don't want that!

Look at this , it's about $1,000.

This laptop is a little more expensive, but trust me, its worth it. It out-preforms a lot of desktops.

A few months ago I got a 2.0ghz celeron Toshiba, it has 256 megs ram, 30 gig hard drive,dvd-cdrw and a 32 meg shared video card. After rebates it cost me 750.00 and I got 24 months no interest financing.

While its not anything close to a beast, I bought it to code/surf the net on. It plays warcraft 3 just fine, and I can actually run BF1942(its playable, just not great).

So far, this laptop has been very good to me, has about 3 hours battery life, and works just great as a portable computer.

I got it from best buy. They are always running financing deals, I would say check them out. Especially the day after thanksgiving(I wouldnt be suprised if you could get a laptop for around 600 bucks).

That was me who posted above. I really dont know why you would pay 3500 for a laptop.

Personally I would buy a Dell Centrino for around 1500 and then build a monster desktop with the rest of the money.

I use my desktop for anything power hungry, I personally think battery power is a big deal, and if your buying one of those crazy high powered desktop replacements, your probably not going to get much life out of it.

DillRye: Keep in mind playable in BF1942 single player is all processor. My 233 was unplayable in BF1942 single player, but on multiplayer, it was great.
