Keep business cards with you at all times. I find that the best business pitches to clients are when you're not fishing for business.
Do good work and for cheap, people remember this, and send you more business. Nothing beats word of mouth :)
I've been self employed for the passed 5 or 6 years now, and I've not once advertised in a paper, or built a website to promote my services. I have bought a house, paid off my car, and am headed to Italy with the lady later this year, so I'd like to think I'm successful in that respect :)
Good work speaks for itself, and in turn, sells itself. I know many starving designers right now because they charge an arm and a leg for work, and when the price isn't what they're expecting, they churn out a product noone is happy with. They're only hurting themselves, but hey, more work for me then eh? :) :)
