PocketPC as removable disk unit, why not??

PocketPC as removable disk unit, why not??

Postby Rizlo+ » Mar 31, 2004 @ 11:55am

Why is not possible to write a utility/driver on pocketpc that makes ppc recognised as removable disk unit under XP/2000/MacOS as happens with every digital camera?
At least for SD/CF slot if not for internal memory... This could be a valid way to get rid of Activestink... Isn't possible? What are the technical limitation to make this?

Ok I know! I mean "get rid of activesync" for just transfering files from desktop to PC, or when you go to another desktop that is not your, you could be able to transfer files without installing that fucking microsoft software!!!

Is that difficult to make a driver that has to be installed to PPC that makes desktop recognise ppc as removable disk unit?
I mean a driver not written by microsoft and not official it's obvious...

It would be a lot useful, I think I would pay for a driver like that...

Yeah right, but doesnt a USB storage device work exactly like that, a storage media only.

A digital camera has mostly hardware to work with where as a PPC needs to sync your mails, your folders, install softwares, remove softwares, upgrades, backup/restores. If you use Microsoft Money you can even sync your financials. Thats why it needs an active sync, an intelligent software to fulfill all those needs and since Microsoft developed WM2003, they are the best people to develop the activesync also.

I guess this is the way it works.

Nope, because you still need drivers for USB connection.... You can't set up WWW/FTP over USB without drivers... Or there is a chance?

it seems most of the people in this forum use there ppcs to play games and watch movies. but for a person who uses it as a business tool it would be great to be able to hook your pocket pc through usb to any pc and be able to transfer files. of couse its easy to tanfer them while you are home or with a computer the you have an active sync connection. the point is that if i go into a clients office and he asks me to give him a report or schedule that i have on my ppc how am i going to give it to him? if he has an infrared, bt or wifi printer i could print it but that is usally not the case. so what to do if he needs the file so he can edit it. what someone like me needs is a way to say hold on let me give you that file. hook my ppc up to thier pc and tansfer the file. but the best solution so far is to buy a $17 flash drive with a removable sd card. solves all your data transfer files.
