Windows 95/98 on your PPC :)

Postby Jaybot » May 22, 2004 @ 5:54pm

There's an old tutorial that Mzguy did on how to make a disk image for windows version here:

http://www.multi.fi/~sgronroo/bochs/bochstut.htm

Miracle, since you seem to me mr. tutorial guy for PSX->PPC game ripping, maybe you'll do one for Bochs PPC next? ;)

I was thinking about it yes :).
But since I do not know wich OS is best that is considered 'usable' speed-wise etc. etc. and since I don't know if developers will continue working on this (the mouse surely is a big problem for starters :)), I do not know if many people will make use of my guide :).

Anyway, anyone who is interested in a guide by me, please post it here, then I'll see what I can do :).

As soon as I can get my PSX adapter to market I will produce a PS2 keyboard and mouse adapter. I've already done some preliminary work on that, and it is actually easier to create the embedded software for that adapter than for the PSX controllers.

That sounds great, but I can't see myself carrying a PS2 mouse+keyboard around :).

Dan, is there any way to assign the F12 key to one of my Asus' hardware buttons?

thx miracle ;)

here , i got win3.11 (with dos6.22) running.

it boots fairly fast (about 10-20 sek until windows is completely loaded) and windows come up fast too...but my biggest problem is that absolutely no input is possible...i cant use the virtual keyboard and i cant use mouseimput...but hey..the startscreen looks nice anyway XD

No problemo :).

I hope that somebody who has like 30 minutes free and knows how to program is able to:

1) Make the F12 button to activate the mouse something else (since PPC's don't have that button)
2) Make the mouse act like it should (meanin: tab on an area to click there, like a real touch screen)

Then if that's working we can start taking about speeding things up :).

3) standart screen resolution, fullscreen (landscape) , scale to fit screen
4) virtualkeyboard
5) complete toolbar (loading diskimages at runtime etc)

Full-screen, scale to fit should look really awesome :P.
That reminds me of a photo I saw a while back of an Linux-based PPC (what's it called again?) that was booting Windows 98, full screen, running bochs :).

woooooow, niiiiiice

But I dont think we will be seeing any decent speeds for a LOOOOONG time, IE until 1ghz+ PocketPCs

I mean, running Virtual PC on my 700mhz G3 iBook doesnt run that fast(fast enough though under OS9)

Well, I'm happy to announce that his has made front page news at Slashdot. It's not often you see PocketPC news there, so while you can.

its not slow at all...i cant test any games at the moment because inputs arent working , but the os itself loads fairly fast.

i think win3.11 would be really useable with the currentversion, you can guess how fast the os operates by looking at the speed the windows need to showup after booting and i cant tell a big difference between ppc and pc version of bochs...hell i want mouseinput now XD.

Yeah, that was me, the guest. Seems my computer forgot that cookies exist.
David, you might want to take down that story soon on PocketGamer. It may be subject to Slashdoting.

Mechcommander, I send a message personally to David right after I posted the topic over at PDAi.org, so he doesn't have to remove anything at all.

And in my experience Virtual PC in overall is pretty slow, but that's just me...

Oh and sponge, thanks for the link I ment that one yes :).
Too bad I couldn't get the W98 splash screen to show up, for some weird reason...

btw, I succesfully installed Windows 98 using 98lite with a little 80mb!
I didn't had a chance to test it on my PPC yet, but it's working great on my PC (using bochs). I'll keep you guys posted.
