Hacker was a term in the 80s, for someone who hacked at code.

Hacker for me is still someone who knows computers. Cracker is the proper term for what most people now called hacker. The cracker is the one doing illegal activities with a computer, not the hacker.

I started programming in 84, so I kinda collaborate with Sponge's comment.

The word has been hijacked (like so many others). I think they even call the assholes that cheat in online games hackers. The term is too ambiguous -- it's probably better to just stick away from it.
