I suggest downloading PocketFrog and finding the functions I wrote for doing both of these functions. Should be trivially easy to convert to GD because I was just calling SetPixel or DrawLine as I recall, should take all of five minutes. I'm sure they aren't the best implementations around, but they are both fairly good.
