Nope - DNS is handled by the router. Whipping out my packet sniffer, it seems to be SMB traffic, even though it's still there if I disable everything but TCP/IP, and disable NetBIOS and LMHOSTS lookup in the TCP/IP properties

Is the traffic multi-cast or uni-cast (i.e. is it a broadcast to look for workgroup members, perhaps), or is it going only to the 2003 box?

(Note that I'm just making questions up now - whatever you answer I'm not sure I can diagnose it further anyway ;))

Nope, the traffic is going straight to the 2003 comp. I'll have to try and dig a little deeper, and get a better packet sniffer too.
