Yesterday I finally got a letter from TPTB saying that I got approval to replace my old laptop. Not a moment too soon considering my old one is already two years old.
Well, no time like the present I always say, so I went out and bought a new one. I already did a lot of research and in the end I decided to buy the top-of-the-line Packard Bell EasyNote R7730.

Here's the spec sheet!
15.4" TFT; 16:9 WXGA 'diamond view' screen with a 1280x800 resolution. It's so bright and crisp, I have to turn it halfway down or wear sunglasses; otherwise I can't look at it.
Pentium M. 725; 1.6 ghz
512 mb ram
80 gig hard drive
DVD/CD burner
ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 vid card
built in wireless 802.11b/g
3x USB 2.0
1x IEEE 1394 [firewire]
1x Type II PC card slot
It's not the most powerful laptop ever built, but it's a good all round machine. My old laptop was a Packard Bell as well, and I really like the brand.
