I don't doubt you'll be able to find decent replacements for the usual apps: word processing, dvd burning, an MP3 player... but the devil is in the details as they say. What if you need something specific like say... an MP3 ID3 tag editor? Or DVD decryption software? Or a particular IRC client? Or a mac-compatible codec? That's one of the reasons why I don't use linux full time: you have to figure out a ton of things for yourself, and it's not always easy.

Having said that, if you're willing to endure some of the mac's quirks and software hurdles, you really can't go wrong with one. I've heard nothing but good things about them.

Who the hell cares if it's user friendly if I ALREADY KNOW HOW TO USE IT. I don't need my computer to make me feel warm and fuzzy inside everytime I need to get something done.

If you really think iPods are in so much demand because of iTunes, then you are the pinnacle of fanboyism. They're in great demand because the device looks great, has plenty of space, and a UI that works great even with 40GB of MP3s. I know if and when I get an iPod, iTunes will be going nowhere near my computers.

I've decided on buying a Compaq r3000z. It's $1224. Specs: Amd Athlon 64 3000+ 512 megs ram 40 gig hd @ 4200 rpm 64 meg geforce 4 440 go and a nice 15.4" WXGA screen.


I seriously considered the Macs, but I'm wary of buying something that I haven't used all that much. ALthough, maybe for my next computer I'll buy one because I do like the ibooks.
