Alien Visitations

Postby Caesar » Nov 7, 2004 @ 9:05pm

I think one thing we should hope for would be an interstellar war. I know wishing for war is horrible, but think about it, Earth would be united against a common foe. It would be good for earth, we could put all our petty "earthling problems" behind us and unite. But then again, I realize how naive that it to think that.

I still would love to find life in our universe. There has got to be life out there, and they may even parallel our technological growth.
Organic Superlube? Oh, it's great stuff, great stuff. You really have to keep an eye on it, though--it'll try and slide away from you the first chance it gets.

The simple truth is, they might be on our doorstep tomorrow morning. You wake up, look out your window and there it is: a space ship the size of New York.

After regaining consciousness you'll probably realise that fighting with people like that would prove to be rather... futile.

If they have the ability for interstellar travel, either they've (hopefully) moved beyond such silly things as war. Or, worse, they have weapons so terrible that we wouldn't want to be in the middle of that fight.

That's part of the reason why it would it's naive of me to think what I do.

Do you think they'd be willing to share their technology and science with us, or would they withhold it because we're not yet ready to take such a huge leap in technology?

I believe that there is other intelligent life out there, but I HIGHLY doubt that they could visit us. If you're really interested, look up how far away the nearest planet is. Now look up the same info for the nearest planet where intelligent life is supposed to be possible. Now think about how long humans have been on Earth, and then how long we're likely to remain alive. Barring the possibility of a species that developed technology about a million times faster than humans (that is, a ship that could travel through space for a couple million lightyears) and then placed a reproducing population on there with enough supplies to last a few billion years (assuming they can't travel anywhere near the speed of light) and that this spaceship will somehow reach Earth with the population (a) intact and (b) fully equipped, I don't we'll be visited anytime soon.

Thinking of the chances of visitation as anything beyond an almost inconceivably remote possibility is pleasantly absorbed in a pipe dream.

What makes you think all of earth would unite against an alien force? Why? Why would Islamic extremists change their tone? They'd probably think the aliens were Allah's vehicle of apocalyptic reformation. Nothing would change simply because we met an alien species that travelled hundreds of light years to our planet. That's a ridiculous, pop notion.

And also what Sandy said
