EZSetup default install dir

EZSetup default install dir

Postby Phantom » Oct 8, 2001 @ 7:31am

Does anyone know how I can install to a user defined directory using EZSetup? Right now, EZSetup asks me if I want to install to a different dir than the default one, but when I click 'no', this is simply ignored...

You should specify your install dir in your .ini file, in the [DestinationDirs] section. I don't think the problem is with EZSetup, but with the CE AppManger.

Dan East

Well this is what I've got:

[CEStrings]
AppName="The Nutcracker"
InstallDir=%CE1%\Nutcracker

and

[DestinationDirs]
Shortcuts.All = 0,%CE2%
Files.ARMExe=0,%InstallDir%
Files.MIPSExe=0,%InstallDir%
Files.SH3Exe=0,%InstallDir%
Files.Saves=0,%InstallDir%\save
Files.Data=0,%InstallDir%\data
Files.Intro=0,%InstallDir%\data\intro

I know the destination is hardcoded here; but how can I make this variable? I got the install file for RocketElite from Doug, but he is also setting it like this. And he doesn't have the same problem for some odd reason.

Okay, I misread your question at first. I asked the exact same thing a little over a week ago:
http://forum.pocketmatrix.com/welcome.pl?board=generaldeveloper&action=display&num=2122

I haven't found anything out yet. :( Maybe he just used the desired path for the Provider?

Dan East

Well looks like The Nutcracker is going to be released with an installer that installs only to \Program files\Nutcracker.... Oh well. People with CF will usually be smart enough to copy it by hand (that works). It's a spot on the polished surface of the front door of The Nutcracker though. :)

I don't think there's any way to tell the AppManager to not allow that option. So I suppose it will install it on the Storage Card - just not in the path Jacco wants it in, which may cause it to not run.

Dan East

No no, when I start the installer, it asks (as with all apps): "Do you want to install to the default installation directory?" or something like that. And at this stage, it doesn't matter what I select. In both cases, the game is installed to \Program Files\Nutcracker, without any further dialogs (not even a file dialog).

Very weird.

The game runs fine from any other dir btw, so you could simply move it after the installation has completed. So I'm not too worried about this, actually.

For the average PM'er that would be no problem. But I am sure this will be a problem with newbies. like PQ's 'gfx.wad' thing, someone ask that at least once a week.

Jacco, did you ever resolve this? I have a couple additional problems with CF cards. My app has several optional components, each with its own installer. However, they all need to be installed in the same place. So if the app was installed on the device, and the plugins installed on the CF card, then things would not work as designed. At this point I am considering just forcing the user to install directly to the device. Did you figure out how you go it to always install to the device?

Dan East

Nope, and one user actually said he had problems running the game from a Microdrive, without complaining about the installer. That sounds like he installed to the Microdrive using the regular procedure. I have no idea how that could have worked on his system.

Here's what happens when I try an install to my iPaq using an EZSetup installed application>
EZSetup Welcome page [next]
license page [Yes]
retrieving application information from mobile device
Install "program name" using the default application install directory
[Yes] [No] [Cancel]
Answer no at this point.......
installing applications (message on PC screen)
dialogue box appears with one drop down list
Select destination media
save in
>Main Memory
>Storage Card
space required in k
space available in k
[OK] [cancel]
note: Storage card space available reports as 'unavailable'
If you choose storage card it goes there.
It should always happen if you choose no at the 'default' message.
So the good news is that your customers can install. I will download the Nutcracker later & try this with your game just to be 100% sure

Hope this helps

Ian

It indeed seems to work. Odd though that you get the dialog, even when there's nothing to choose from...
