A Jornada 720 version using the new GAPI

Before everyone starts bugging Larry, let me define "2D acceleration" for you. The hardware has the capability to render some 2D graphical primitives, such as lines, circles, blitting, etc. Quake does not, and cannot, make use of such 2D primitives. As you know, its interaction with the hardware consists of copying a block of bytes into a buffer. :) Now the Windows CE display drivers should make use of such hardware capability. That is one of the reasons Casios excel at some benchmark categories over the faster iPaq. That is very deceiving though, because no graphically intensive games make use of those Windows CE drawing primitives. When they are included in the overall benchmark score it gives the Casio a higher performance compared to other devices than what can be expected with real-world software.

Dan East

Rob, thanks for the config (and thanks to Moose, obviously). I'll plug that in and maybe try the o/c utility as well. Do you have any tips on how to tinker with the 720's keyboard mapping (ctrl & alt in particular)? Ideally, it would be nice to disable/remap the Windows Start Menu key (I know there's an app for Win98 that does it.)

Also, I assume pak0.pak has all the code for levels 2, 3, and 4, but won't play them without the pop.lmp file in the gfx folder, correct? (i.e., if I swap pak1.pak for pak0.pak, will it take up a lot more memory?)

The pak1.pak is 33meg. You can gzip it but I found that the performance is REALLY bad with a gzipped pak file. I went back to running pak0.pak unzipped from my CF card.

I am going to release a new version of PQ. I have changed two of the functions in this one to make them faster, and I know get 8.7 fps unoverclocked, instead of 8.6. It's a start. The new file is posted on freedrive, and I am going to email it to Jim.

D'OH! I shoulda bought a 64MB CF card, not 32. Rob, re JS Overclock, what do you do to be sure nothing is updating FlashROM while you're overclocked? Just stay off ActiveSync and don't run any other programs? (I'm a little wary from the disclaimers on JS's site re "incompatible with HPC & HPC Pro")

Any idea if I can use Qped to strip individual levels out of pak1.pak to fit them unzipped onto a 32MB CF card?

I have the same problem. I bought a 32meg CF and with Quake I am running out of room. I think I will look into a 128meg. A least my digital camera can use the 32meg. That will double what I have in it now.

Ok, here is the deal with the overclocking. I've done a lot of tests and here is what I have found out. First of all, the 720 is a HPC2000 meaning that it runs on the same version of ce as a pocket pc.
2. When you turn off your 720 it resets the clock speed.
3. Sound is shut off when in 236 mode (my guess to reduce heat)
4. Sound works in all other modes.
5. You get 8.7 fps when it is not overclocked at all (the casio at 200mhz only gets 7. something)
6. If you think it is getting too hot, you could always underclock it for a little while (or turn it off)
7. If you want blazing fast speed at quake, and still have portability, get a laptop.

That is what I know about overclocking. I am personaly happy with 8.7 fps and 6.1 on 320 x 240, so I will probably not overclock too often.
But, overclocking is up to you, it is your device.

By the way, at 221mhz I got 9.1 fps

Yep, I just got 8.6 fps with the new .exe and the autoexec.cfg. On a device you can stick in a hip pocket, that's pretty darn fast. And you can't beat the price. I'm happy. Thanks Dan, Rob, Trarman, Moose, et al. for advancing the state of the art.

Is there a line I can put in the autoexec to make 320 X 240 the default video mode?

I was wondering how many people are going to mainly play in the higher resolution. I'll tell you guys what, if I get 10 posts saying that you want that to be the standard, then I will recompile it that way.

I will be playing in 320 X 240 always. Hopefully you will be successful in getting more fps from it.

Thanks!

Please leave the video modes as they are so all versions will be synchronized.

You can tell Quake to start at any video mode you like using the vid_mode variable. Add the following to your autoexec.cfg:

vid_mode "1"

The readme.txt and an autoexec.cfg should be distributed with Pocket Quake to help clarify such items. Quake is an extremely configurable engine. Almost any change you can think of can be set in the console or by variables in the configuration files. All defaults should resort to the highest quality rendering, so that if no configuration file is used then a good benchmark can be aquired that can be used to compare very diverse hardware. There are many methods of reducing rendering quality to increase FPS. Take a look at the variables described in the ReadMe.txt file, and search this forum for configuration files created by others to increase FPS.
Thanks!

Dan East

WOW! I cannot believe how good the game looks.
Thanks Rob, and Dan too.
I will always play at the higher resolution.
Its too bad we really cant take advantage of the bigger screen on the Jornada 720.

Brian
Well, as stated before, it is possible to take advantage of it by either stretching the display, or making the fov bigger, but that makes PQ much slower, and at that speed, the bigger display is just a novalty, and a waste of time that could have been spent optimizing. I will however, center the diplay if someone sends me a cool picture to put around it. 640x 240 please.

I have also considered an extended resolution for Pocket PC's; 480x360. It would be landscape, and use the sub-pixel technique to increase the resolution (like Jimmy Landscape does). It would look really good (it should look something like the anti-aliasing you get with OpenGL), but like you said, it would be more of a novelty because of the slow performance.

Dan East
