Infrared is very slow. A serial/usb connection is much faster.

Infrared is meant for syncing on the go (with laptops) or transfering information between another handheld device.

Serial and IRDA are the same speed. Except IRDA fluctuates. USB [1.x] is 10 times faster, USB2.0 is 100 tiems faster than both methods..

You can buy an irda dongle thing for your PC. It just attaches to the serial port. Jeteye has been producing IR stuff for quite a while. You will always get much slower throughput with irda than serial, even if it is at the same baud rate. irda throttles based on the ambient IR light that constantly interferes, plus error correction kicks in and resends data quite often, again because of ambient IR.

Dan East

And what about IR with cell phones? Is it much slower then when you use a cable?

I´m searching for an IR cellphone too, but cant find any here in Brazil. I´ve heard that Nokia and Gradiente have some IR modem cell phones.. Do you know where I can find one here in Brazil Luciano?

IR is the same speed. Except the fastest data connect of current cell phones is about 9.6kbps. So don't expect any fast surfing.
The Nokia 8260 is the most popular IRDA Cell Phone, along with the 8890.
Ericson has an accessory that fits ALL of their cell phones to enable IRDA through them.

Well, Diego, first of all you'll have to decide between TDMA and CDMA. Here in my region (TIM Telepar and Global), we have both. Generally speaking, here in Brazil TDMA is better (what I heard is that it's faster, simpler and more up-to-date). I have a Motorola TalkAbout, and I use TIM (TDMA). The same model for the CDMA system has a built-in modem (if I knew...).
But for TDMA there is the Nokia 7190 (or it's the 7160? -gotta check it out) that I think is THE best, because it has a modem and IR capabilitys. If your thinking of TDMA, I guess this is the best (hopefully after I calm down my wife after the iPAQ this will be my next aqquisition).
For CDMA I know there's some Motorolas with modem (but I don't think they have IR) and Samsung has one model (if I'm not mistakein), but doesn't have IR.
So, if you don't bother with the use of cables, both systems are ok. But with IR, I think the Nokia rules.

Blue tooth (stupid name, don't you think?) capability will take a REALLY long time to reach South America.

I know what it is, but doesn't it need wireless radio towers everywhere? Or do you not need amplifiers and you can just put a Bluetooth PCI card in your comp and a CF Bluetooth in your PPC and it syncs anywhere?

Bluetooth is short range, like a few hundred feet. It is mainly for peer-to-peer type connectivity. Think IR with greater range, faster bandwidth, and no line-of-site limitation.

Dan East

...so you just need two or more Bluetooth enabled devices and they talk to each other. No repeaters, trunk system, etc.

Dan East
