Poll: Which of the new PPCs yould you buy?

Poll: Which of the new PPCs yould you buy?

Postby AzRaEl » Oct 16, 2001 @ 7:45pm

If you didn't have a PPC and were going to select one of the new ones displayed at PPC Summit, which one would you pick.
1)New IPAQ 3800 series. Fixed button problems, better screen, and built on bluetooth, but still a need for sleeves.
2)New HP Jornada. Sleek looks, and greatly improved specs on the reletively solid Jornada base.
3)New Casio E200. 2 built in ports, and the good old Casio stability for game playing, and FINALLY equipped with an ARM processer.
4)The 64MB @migo. The usefulness of a built in PCMCIA slot with the new OS, but no news on the 2 button press thing.
5)New Toshiba handheld.Smallest, with two built in ports, but Toshiba has no background in the PPC biz.
6)Wait until next Dec. for the X-Scale, if it comes out.
Just want to see what everyone thinks, but please no answers like "Any of the others cuz the IPAQ sux!". I would like REAL reasons.

not the hp - only has type1 cf slot. - No microdrive, no wireless lan.

not the ipaq - no expansion without sleeve.

casio - dont like the speaker-in-button design, but casio are generally well built and reliable. Guess I would take this one if I could use the usb capability.

toshiba - I like this one a lot, nice and small but with 2 slots :) I'm not worried about their background, I think they've made enough laptops to have some idea what they're doing...
Only concern here is the small screen, however I hear the dot-pitch is better so that may not be a negative at all.

@migo - not heard much about this one, I don't think the pcmcia slot is that useful when you can have a cf slot AND an SD slot in the other devices. Also this one is impossible to find in the shops, personally I would never spend £500 on a device without being able to look at it first.

Waiting for X-scale is also tempting, it depends on whether your current pda will last that little bit longer... my em-500 will...

With everything available in CF type I, why is there is obsession for type II? The ONLY item not available is a microdrive.

I've looked at the microdrives and do not miss them for the following:

1.) power drain - even the new ones will suck a battery down faster than a CF

2.) moving parts - the more complex the machine, the more likely it is to break

3.) expense - 256MB CF cards cost me $70.

James
