Microdrive Confusion

Microdrive Confusion

Postby Alfwok » Aug 22, 2001 @ 5:18pm

I need more space! I have an @migo and theres so many things to chose from and news of better new ones coming. I dont need much space. What are the best micro drives for the least amout of money? I saw on the iomega site they have that buy 4 of the 40mb disks and get the adapter free for only $50 im thinking it must suck for only fifty bucks....does it? I have around 150-200 to spend.

with $150-$200 you should look into a PCMCIA flash card. Their cheaper than CF, and will fit in the @migo.

PCMCIA is almost always significantly cheaper. Unless now that we tell everyone about it prices have gone up..

That flash card looks good but it says typeI doesn't it need to be typeII so it will work in my @migo? And why is @migo amigo and not atmigo?

keep in mind that cf cards use less power, and the 340mb MicroDrives are less power efficient than the 1gb.

If a cf card says typeI what does that mean? I know @migo uses typeII. Does that mean i just need to buy a pcmcia adapter for it?

CF and PCMCIA are two different sizes. By default the @migo uses only PCMCIA, but if you were two spend 15 bucks on a PCMCIA -> CF converter, you can also use CF cards. It is my inderstanding that any device that can take type II cf cards, can also take type I. But not vice versa. I would say I'm 99.9% sure about all of that;)

Or you could buy the Kingston 2GB PCMCIA card for less than a 1 GB MicroDrive.

I have bought a 448mb PCMCIA card off ebay(used) for $180. I have seen people get 1gb microdrive new for about $330(check around for best deal). And I would check up on PocketPCThoughts.com, every once in a while they post good deals on CF cards.

PCMCIA cards come in 3 flavors:
TYPE 1, 2, and 3. I think the standard is type 2. Your @migo takes type 2.

CF cards are different..
Type 1 CF and Type 2 CF can both fit in a PCMCIA type 2 slot, if you use the correct adaptor.(Some adapters olny work with type 1 CF).

So, just buy a CF type 1 or 2 TO PCMCIA type 2 adapter card, and you'll be all set :) Either type of CF card will fit into your amigo.
