But I don't really understand why anyone would need cracked/pirated programs. I've seen freeware tools for as good as any application and even if the programs cost something it's not likely to be over 40$.

You can only use freeware and you still have LOTS of good programs and apps out there. And the most expensive prog I bought so far was SC2000 for almost 30 bucks.
