I dont think this has a very good chance of working but here goes. I want to connect my IPAQ via Bluetooth to my Linksys router which is connected to the DSL modem. Can I connect a bluetooth reciver/trnsmitter thingy into the router via CAT5? Now the real question is will I be able to surf on my home DSL at school which is only a mile away (is bluetooths range a mile)?

I think bluetooth is only a couple feet like maybe 50, maybe you can extend the range though.

you could get a 802.11b card for your ipaq, if u have a pcmcia slot, they make them for about 80. if you have a cf slot, then its much more expensive, $149. that is the best solution for now. u would also have to get a 802.11 router to replace your old one.

In most cases, about 100 feet. If you were to have the signal sent to one focused area, you could send the signal to your school. BUT, you would have to have direct line of sight, you would need to set up a reciever for the signal on the roof, and you would have to send the signal throughout your school with a wireless router. It is highly unlikely you could get this to work, or that you would be willing to spend the amount of cash we are talking about here.

You can build an antenna in your yard to extend it like 500-700 feet. Its a lil pricey but all parts are at radio shack and the lumber yard. If you wanna pay 10 grand you can extend it 5 miles with a big fucking antenna.

Outdoors you can go several hundred feet with the standard antennas. Indoors range is greatly reduced to the 100 feet as Matt mentioned. Also, bandwidth will be reduced as range increases / signal strength decreases, until it is down to 1 mbit/s. I can tell no difference in speed between ethernet 10-BaseT and WiFi at short ranges. You can span several miles using Yagi directional antenna, which cost around $200 a piece. Of course that is from a static point to another static point, and must be line of sight.

Dan East
