DivX, VCD & PS1

Postby Dan East » Mar 29, 2002 @ 10:46pm

Right now I'm leaning toward the setup recommended by XPortZ. First off, the majority of what we watch will not be DVD, but captured VHS. So that really only leaves DivX or VCD for the majority of the playback. So I'm probably going to go with the TH-5688 5.6" Active Matrix display, and the Supertek "AV Baby" portable CD/MP3/VCD player:
http://www.mp3playerstore.com/stuff_you ... index.html

The display is the top one on that page. The player is at the very bottom of the page, middle unit. They offer a package that's $199 for that display and player. That includes the DC power adapter for the player and remote control (for both the display and player). I will use the car's audio system for audio playback (when headphones aren't in use).
The other advantage is that I can pack a couple hundred MP3s on a CD-R and play it in the portable player.

I finally got everything ironed out with my Pinnacle PCTV Pro tuner / capture card. I can capture 30 fps at 320x240 with maximum audio quality without dropping any frames on my PIII 500 machine. I've just made my first VCDs from home videos, and the quality is very good for display on a 5.6" display. I sized WMP to 5.6" on my laptop screen, so that's a good approximation of what the real display hardware would look like. DivX still can't be beat as far as giving the most bang-per-byte, but VCD is extremely ubiquitous, and fine for VHS captures.

It would be far easier and cheaper to go that route, and eventually add a $50 eBay PS One onto the system for gaming than try and contort a PS One to do it all itself. I would have to mod it for VCD and CD-R, plus purchase a power inverter, plus the display is a little smaller and I wouldn't be able to mount it from the ceiling.

2 and 4? then get them drawing, man.

those extra hours of art in your car could make them the next randall schleufer!

i might have got that system since they're doing that $200 offer but it cant play divx so its pretty useless for me.

Stay away from consoles emulating consoles. Very far away. People have been developing emulators for the Genesis and SNES on the Dreamcast and they are nowhere near perfect, and the DC is the simplest platform to develop for since it is built on Windows CE. I couldn't even begin to imagine how horrible a PS1 playing GB, GG, SMS, or PCE would be.

In case you haven't figured it out yet, I am a console junkie (although I do spend more time on my computer)...

And one thing: Did that VCD/CD/MP3 player combo also play DIVX? I thought I saw one of those for sale over at www.lik-sang.com or www.vcdhelp.com, but it didn't mention DIVX. If it can also play DIVX, I might have to pick one up then...

And no, that emulator plugin plugs into the back of the original PS1's that have the parallel port on the back, not the new PS1's that support the screens. And in order to get that working, you would have to burn the ROMS to a CD and run them from there, and like I said before, you need a mod chip to get your PS1 to read CD-R's. Not a good emulation solution.

You can buy the 8cm blank DVD-R and CDR disks anywhere. I saw them at Target! Imagine that!

yeah, you can easily find blank mini cds anywhere, i got 100 of them for $15 and they hold 185mb which is great for DivX quality. plus the processor is a 485mhz PPC, so it should be able to decode DivX movies at high quality! blank mini DVDs, dunno, ohh yah the dataplay mpeg4 player is cool! the disks are smaller than CF cards!! dunno when its coming out though, or its price. DVD burner prices are dropping down a lot. still though, they cost like $400 external. http://www.dataplay.com/jsp_files/en/wh ... ducts.jsp#

400$, that's what I bought my first 8x CD writer for...

The GameCube is not available in Europe yet, does it actually support self-made CDs / DVDs? Is there any progress concerning DivX for GameCube? Not to my knowledge.
