Thanks to a girl called Rhonda (she sent me a direct email) I am getting closer.
She told me that in VirtualDub, under Video > Frame Rate, she sets "Change so video and audio durations match. THIS DID NOT WORK FOR ME. I, therefore, kept it on "No Change". However, she also introduced me to Audio > Interleaving. By trial and error, I figured out that if I had the following settings ...
"Preload 0 ms of audio before video starts" (I erased the default of 500)
"Delay audio track by -101 ms" (I got the "delay" from the *.wav file that was originally created)
... then I got a preview and a file that was very near synchronization. There is still a little bit of non-synchronization but .. it is in the low millisecond range. If I can't come up with another button to set, I think I will live with this.
Thanks for your help Rhonda
