I have one of the Conversations With God, books. In my agnostic, skeptic, opinion, this man is practicing a form of what is called automatic writing. He asks a question to himself, then he answers it with the first thoughts that come to mind. You could say that God, gods, his holy guardian angel, his subconcious, or whatever else was putting the thoughts in his mind, or he could just be a natural philosopher (as we all can be, if we learn to listen to ourselves). I have did similar things to what this man has done with a pencil and a notebook, and I believe anyone can do it, if you are in a calm, reasonable, mood.
My poety and art works in a similar fashon. Depending on my state of mind, I can write beautiful uplifting poems, or dreadful depressing stuff that seems like it came from the pits of hell. Personally whatever you believe about this mans questions and answers, you should remember that they are his personal truth, wether divine inspired or not, and you should seek your own (and I think he says something like that in one of the books). I think we all have an inner compass that steers us in the way of good, aka your concious, and we only have problems in life if we ignore it, or completely turn it off.
But anyway, that's just my two cents, and you should come to your own conclusions on this stuff.
