My win2k box doesn't crash very often. MSFT has certainly improved, but it's still a long ways from being as stable as a proper *nix setup. My 2k box still needs to be restarted every week or so, for instance. I don't know what causes it, but windows seems to get slow when it's left up for a long time. And I only run a handful of programs -- all of them mainstream software.
And what is the lifespan on a windows install? How long until the bastard refuses to boot up?
There's nothing quite like that feeling after you've stayed up all night and finished a major assignment, only to see your computer crash -- not only whiping out the last hour or so of your work, but also leaving you with a computer that won't boot up. That happened to me last semester, and contributed to my only B+.
Of course, it wasn't Windows fault I lost that A. Windows is only a tool -- and with well-known failings. Regardless, I've learned my lessons.
The most important one: any faith in Windows to stay operational is eventually going to screw you.
